Neoprene also called polychloroprene is a synthetic elastomer that was invented for commercial development by DuPont in 1930. Polymerization of chloroprene produces neoprene. Polymerization is a process that involves end-on-end linking together of monomers to form a long-chained molecule. Potassium persulfate is used in initiating the polymerisation process to form neoprene. DuPont first marketed this compound in 1931 and had trademarked it under the trade name DuPrene to prevent production and selling by other manufacturers. However, this product has adopted a generic name and is being sold as neoprene. Neoprene is sold mainly in latex form and as solid rubber.
